We tasted the best eats in the city a few months ago, and here are the three must-visit places in Nagoya that will transport you to the fourth largest city in Japan, where you can touch its spirit, history, and souvenirs to bring back home.

Housing a legendary sword and 4,000 other relics, this Shinto shrine is located in the namesake district near Jingu-Mae station. It’s the second oldest shrine in Japan and attracts more than nine million visitors every year. Rebuilt in Shinmei-zukuri style, the shrine lets you leave your troubles at the wooden gates and clear your mind at the tranquil courtyard gardens.

How to get there: take the Meitetsu Line, and get off at Jingu-Mae Station.
During the sakura season, everybody takes a photo of the Nagoya Castle framed by the cherry tree branches. Not as famous as the white Himeji castle two hours away to the west, but an equally intriguing piece of history. You can walk up and down this 7-story building showing the rich history of the city and Japan. And more fascinating is the Honmaru Goten Palace, the residence of the first lord of Owari province, which has been recreated in the same look from over 400 years ago.

If Osu Kannon temple is favourited on your map, take a detour to the Osu shopping street full of specialist shops, cafés, and restaurants. It has been a famous street for people who need almost anything for more than 400 years. From Japanese fashion to handmade products, what you’ll find here will put a stop on your shopping spree.
